Replace radio backlight

My cousin's radio backlight in his '99 328 is out and I was wondering if anyone had any tips on how to replace it. I haven't seen his car (ever) yet so I have no idea on how to even approach removing the headunit and/or faceplate...if it's even possible. Any help would be appreciated.
