Shorten Indicator Lever in E30 for DVD Screen!

Gday guys, I have installed a dvd screen in my E30 and have run into a problem with my indicator lever. When the screen folds out fully before it retracts back towards the dash it hits the indicator lever so i gotta pull it right out of the way into highbeam. Pain in the ass and at night it gets dangerous for other drivers. Now since im an aussie im driving right hand drive so it could be your window wiper lever over there in the US but yeh you get my problem. Im sure there are other E30 drivers out there who have run into my problem. Just want to know any remedys to the problem. I took the steering wheel off and got the lever right out but looked like i couldnt pull it apart. Anyway i'll leave it there and see what you guys suggest. Thanks fellas, Ryan
