| Double Din E36... help?! Hey, im interested in instaling a double din head unit where the stock radio and climate control are. I've seen it done, so im sure its posible. I have no problem relocating the climate control. Its just there only seems to be 4-5 inches of depth where it was. To those of you who have done this mod or know whats behind the climate control unit, whats required to get 6 1/2 inches of depth to fit the head unit in. Im going to be instaling the Alpine IVA-W205 to those who are curiouse. thanks alot in advance!! |

| It's not a drop-in, if that's what you're asking. You'll need to relocate your climate controls down to under the computer, where the pocket is. It's not just going to drop in, you'll have to mount it securely and trim it out to look good, or you'll have gaps on the rounded corners. If you do not have fully electronic climate controls, that's a bitch. Rerouting cables can suck. The electronic ones are easy, just pull the cables down. Second you'll need to modify the ducts behind the radio for the vents above the radio. You can cut and glue new ABS plastic pieces, or heat and bend the ducts. (heating is the way to go, but be careful not to set the ABS on fire, because it'll be messy to put it out. Then you'll have to use the supplied brackets/sleeve to secure the radio in place. Next you'll have to make a trip panel, or modify the one that comes with the Alpine. once this is all done, wire the radio, test to make sure everything works correctly, than install and trim the radio. This guy did it himself in 5 days according to his video description. Most good shops charge by the hour. 4-5 hours sounds about right. At my former shop would have run you about $200 + parts. If you're not willing to pay to have it professionally done, try it yourself. Just remember, if you screw anything up, you'll have to pay to have that fixed too.
