where i the best place to put a hole to get the wire from the battery through to the car (battery is in the bonnet).

there will be a hole already in the 'engine bay wall' (im not sure of the technical name). I dont thyink it legal or of ur best interest to make a hole through this. i would just find the hole already there. it is most likely on the drivers side

look for the factory rubber grommit (bushing) that runs through the firewall.

Make a cut for the wire slightly smaller than the diameter of the wire to ensure it is still weatherproof.
