Larger speakers in rear deck?

My friend just got a 318is and he wants to upgrade his speakers. He was wondering if you could cut the speaker openings on the rear deck in order to fit a larger speaker. I know I've seen some people do this but I'm wondering how involved the work is. Any information you could give me would be appreciated. Thanks.
