| Components for E36 Convertible? Hey guys, I'm looking to buy some mids & hi's for my E36 convertible. From what I've found, I have 5.25" front kicks, 3" mids, 1" tweets. In the rear side panels are 3" mid, and 1" tweets. Now... Is it possible to fit a 4" midrange into the original 3" hole? I have looked around quite a bit and have not found any component sets that carry a 3" midrange. What I was planning/thinking of doing is to go with the MB QUART PCE213 5.25" component set in the front and go with the MB QUART PCE210 4" component set in the rear. Will I have any major problems here? Also, if the 4" midrange will fit... would it sound better to go with some 4" components up front as well? I only say this because the 5.25" midrange is sooo far up in the kick panel and the 4" is mounted directly in the door. It seems logical to me that you would hear the 4" more because of it's location. One more thing... if I remember correctly the factory tweeters are molded directly to the grills that fit in the panels? Has anyone successfully removed the factory tweeters and installed new ones and used the original grills? I want to use the factory grills for the look. I'm thinking the dremel tool might come out? Well any help or advice is appreciated. Thanks, Josh |

| Check this other thread. I run an MB Quart setup with 4's in the doors. I attached a picture in that thread that shows the adapter ring you need for the larger speakers. They will fit without it but they hit the part of the door when you put the panel back on so you need to move them out. I can take better pictures if you want me to. 3-way components for 1996 328is

| Thanks for the reply, I'm not sure if I like that or not. Obviously it probably makes a huge difference in the sound quality, but you have different door panels. I'm not sure if I would like how that looks on my door panels. Where did you find the adapters? Are they made by MB QUART? I wonder if I could make the 4" work on the rear speakers... since there are no rear windows to worry about. I'm planning to get into the car this week and get some things done. I will post pics and let you guys know what I end up with. Thanks, Josh |

| Well, I finally got all my equipment and got some work done. I ended up modifying all the stock speaker locations to fit my speakers. It wasn't easy, but I went with the JL Evo XR653's up front, which is a 6.5 Midbass, 4" mid, and 1" tweeter. I had to modify the kick panels to fit the 6.5 and I had to modify the door panel to fit the 4". It was a lot of work, but I think it paid off.... they sound great! I went with JL Evo XR525's in the rear. Which is a 5.25" midbass with a 1" tweeter. The stock speakers were 4", but with a little work they fit right in. I'm pushing them with a 4 channel Rockford Fosgate 4004. They sound great, but I still have a lot of work to do on the sub and amp racks. I'll post more pics when it's all finished maybe later this week. Here is a pic of the JL's in the doors.... I think they look pretty good. - Josh |
