5 series audio distress call...

Hey guys. I'm new to the forum and I've been trying to work this issue on my own for awhile now. Has anyone....ANYONE, attempted successfully or otherwise, in upgrading their OEM head unit and/or speakers in their 1999-2002 5 series BMW? Any help...ANY HELP or advice would be greatly appreciated.
