Ever install a laptop in your ride?

Has anyone ever installed a laptop in their ride and hooked it up to their stereo? I'd love to have a navigation system in the car, but don't want to drop the $2000 for the DVD-rom and another $700 for a monitor. I was told you can hook up a hand held GPS to a laptop with Microsoft Streets & trips and it'll do basicly the same thing. Can anybody confirm this?

If this would work i could also use the PC to play MP3's throught the system. Could I just run the audio out put of the PC into a source switcher? Or would I need some special connection?

get a wireless FM modulator farenhiet sells them....it wont sound as clean as a direct input but the same performance as an ad on cd changer thats run threw the fm modulator...... as for GPS i have a GPS hooked to my i-paq handheld it ok but it has its limits...... if u do alot of driving a in-car gps is worth it
