S54 bearing recall?

From what I understand BMW acknowledged that cars built between 10/01 to 02/02 were affected, though I've also heard of cars as late as 2003 having the same problem.

I've found a lot of information from overseas sources but what happened here in Australia? Were all engines recalled or only the ones that popped?

If I run a VIN past BMW Sydney, or wherever the car was serviced, will they be able to tell me?

They won't give you any information if you aren't the registered owner, fair one.

If your buying one, ask the seller to okay you getting the service history.

Before you buy an E46 M3 do as Benny suggested and get the official BMW service history faxed to you. The rod bearing recall service action will be on there if it has been done.

they thought the pump was/is the culprit so they replaced it and the rod bearings just to be safe on vehicles within the chassis range, its done by vin and afaik it covers vehicles in the effective range as a precaution, not just vehicles that have come unstuck.

Ive never had problems calling a service department in the course of working on a vehicle to check to see if a recall campaign has been performed, not in the recent past anyway. I doubt they will give you any other specific information about the vehicle, but id try calling the dealership and asking to speak to someone in the service department to give it a try, the worst they can say is they cant help you.

Defiantly as all the 01-02 cars were fitted with them! BMW didn't change the bearings out until sometime in 03, along with the oil pumps which also caused engine failures

How's the M going? You sort the brake kit out? Still waiting on pics with the new seats in!

Check out M3forums, all the info you want is there. Just remember that the warranty that applies to the States doesn't apply here.

Which car is it? For yourself?

Yeah thats perfect, if I ever decided to upgrade mine I'd just go with GT3 calipers. Anything else 6 piston etc is overkill, and the brake booster probably won't cope.
