E46 Suspension Noise

Hey guys,

Hope everyone had a wonderful xmas and new year party.

I noticed a problem this afternoon while going for a short drive. There seems to be a clunking noise with every bump i hit, it appears to be coming from the rear right but i could be wrong.

I jacked up the car to see if the shocks have punched a hole through the mounts and made sure the springs were still in place, everything seems normal.

Could this be the subframe issues I read about in the US forums? If so where is the best place to get this checked? Do you guys know any places? or should i take it to a BMW dealer?

Finally, would this defect be covered by BMW at all?

Any help/advice would be great!

I have heard that a noise from the rear like a creaking kind of sound can be linked to the subframe issues.

Did the noise suddenly appear?

If I was worried about my car havig this issue, personally I would take it to a dealer, cos they really do know what they are talking about, and with something like that, I wouldn't want to screw around, but if you don't like that, then any one that specialises in BMW's could probably check it.

It just happened this afternoon, I had just come back from a trip to Melbourne, clocked 2300km round trip.

Came back on the sunday, washed the car and took it out today..I drove no more than 3 minutes and heard the noise over the radio.

I would say its probably your rear shock mounts if its more of a clunk over bumps. pull the boot lining to check them. they are bolted in with 2 bolts and the top shaft of your shock sticks through. wriggle the top shaft and if it has any movement the rubber on your shock mount has perished.
they are quite easy to replace and the 2 mounts are around $100 from dealer. I did mine on the e36 recently.
