WD40 is still primarily a distilate based product, it will break down the rubber so it isnt a good idea. A bit of overspray is fine, if it is a squeak you want belt squeal stuff. CRC make it, comes in a green or blue and yellow can.

There is this other stuff called Dry Lube. Its in a yellow packaging. Its about $2 a stick. The stick is about 10- 15cm Long. Thats also great for belts. You just have the car running, and push the stick onto the belt while its in motion. Works a treat.

ahh yes, that crc squeal stuff is called belt grip... you should not use wd40 or any crc products on v-betls full stop, not even belt grip... crc & wd40 are kero and petrol based products which will perrish the belts...

firstly: how old is the belt? the belt may have been running a bit loose at one stage and its glazed over where it grips, and no matter how much you tighten it, it will still squeal... secondly: what condition are the pulleys in? are the sides of the V section (where the grip is transmittted) flat or are the sides a concave shape? if they are not flat you need new pulleys...

i hope this has helped you out mate
