Unhappy Not on the Pac Rim...

I am not actually on the Pacific Rim but am within it! Right in the middle in the most isolated metropolis in the world, Hawaii!! How is everyone doing out there?

You know, it is really nice to be able to park your car somewhere and do your thing. Then as you are doing what you came there for you realize people checking out your car, its called satisfaction. I am satisfied with my car and am happy that I could afford to bring this piece of beauty into the lives of others around me. They just can't drive it!!!

One bad thing about Hawaii is the limited space/distance one can drive in on any of the islands. I see some of the fests you guys have on the mainland or in Europe somewhere, then I get jealous. We do have small, short distance rides here but they do not compare to what the mainland has.

One good thing about Hawaii is that we drive our cars less, on average than our mainland counterparts. So our cars tend to last longer, and me, the mileage miser, I try not to drive my car at all unless I have to. This is an attempt to preserve it for as long as possible... hope it works!

Aloha,

Aloha,
I try a similiar strategy to keep the mile off of my car. I live in down town San Francisco, so driving is rarely a necessity. When I am home in Portland though, I always ask to use my parents cars so I can keep the miles off of the ///M. Does the salt water in the air get to your cars paint and parts?

I think the newer cars have had the treatment done to them at the manufacaturer so that the car and metal used are more resistant. For the most part being here, surrounded by salt water is no problem unless you park near the water in a late model car everyday. You will see rusted out cars here and from what I can see they spend lots of time on the north shore where the big waves are, and where there are big waves there is spray that goes inland. I work on Pearl Harbor and do not park in the parking stalls right on the water unless there are no other stalls available.

Thats about it, I mean you really dont see cars with corroded parts any more than on the mainland, or elsewhere in the world, batteries included.

Wow, such anger. Ya'll might want to say woooooo-ssssaaaaaa and take a deep breath. On a lighter note. I'm currently living in korea for the next 3 years. So, that would make me part of this group then, right?
A little about myself. As being employed by the us gov't, i signed my life away and joined the army. Someone must have a sence of humor in the D.A., because you can't drive over here. Jee, that makes it hard to be a car guy. What the hell, right? It's 3 years of a life time. I'm 21, from ohio back in the states, and currently don't own a car at the moment. I'm more than likely going to pick up an e30 when i get back.

If you can, stay out of the Red Dragon (above McDonalds) and other such places in Songtan, save your money, and then buy a brand new ride when you get back to the states. I know its hard to do when you are in a place like that though!

Damn, no one's gotten that close to describing something here so far. I'll remember that tip, i know exactly where you are talking about. BTW, were you in the military?

Your right, saving money here is almost impossible.

I am a reservist... was active Army a bunch of years ago but could not handle the small mindedness of some people directly above me... the civilian/reserve world is perfect for me. I'm an E-7 one weekend a month and have been to South Korea a number of times for conferences and exercises. Good fun! I like the Russian girls there...

I work at Pearl Harbor now at a computer help desk supporting all services except the boy scouts. Whoops, girls scouts too. If you really want to have fun, take a short trip to Pattaya, Thailand. Trust me on this one. I could make your ears bleed with story after story coming out of Thailand.

Good Luck with your plan.

Can you buy a car there in SK without paying taxes? Well I know you can but can you get what you want... thats the problem. Osan AB has a pretty good layout up at the BX.

See ya,

Kaliimc

How is Oahu nowadays? My pops was in the Navy and we lived on Oahu from '90-'92. It was great when I lived there, but how is it now? Do you have any pictures you could pm me? I am joining the Navy and thinking about going to Hawaii. I know that it is up the the Gov't to decide where I actually go but, I have been TOLD that HI is open for the rate that I am going into. I am going to be an Electricians Mate. Get at me okay. Oh, my name is Justin and I am 22 years old. I have 3 years of college completed and I want the military to finish me off so that I can become an Officer.

Gettin' at ya!

Oahu is the same as it has been for years. Just more people and more cars. Same local people; mokes (aka Hawaiian rednecks) drive like they own the road and no one else should be there. The military is always a good thing over here, especially the Navy. I work on Pearl and its a good place to work. You could easily finish your schooling on base here (I'm at work on Pearl right now) with the different University sattelite offices. One of the major schools attended by the military is HPU. www.hpu.edu.

Lots of sunshine, beach, alcohol, and people here!! We are permanently in the sunbelt. Are you in WA?

Hey thanks for the addy for HPU, for the last couple of months we have had almost nothing but sun and heat, but the last couple of days it has really only been in the 70's up here on Whidbey Island. Normally between 80 and 90 though, and the rare 104. I was driving to Seattle two weeks ago, and I went over this bridge there and I was stuck in traffic and I looked at me temp guage in my car.......104, I was like damn that sure is hot. Anyways thanks
