Oil pressure light stays on for 3 seconds at startup

The oil pressure warning light stays on for a few seconds at startup. Any ideas?

You think it's just telling me I need to replace the oil pan gasket and oil level sensor O-ring?

I was curious about that too on my 325i it stays on for a few seconds but then again the past three e30's I have been in are the same way all 325i/is's so maybe ours just do that.

I think you just worry way to much about every little thing, seriously man... if your pan gasket or level sensor o-ring were bad enough for the idiot light to notice, you surely would notice it, if at very least the puddle of oil under the car....

Eric, don't worry about the pressure light coming on at startup.

All e30's do it, because it takes time when the car is cold for it to build up oil pressure.

The only time you should be concerned is when it stays on and doesn't turn off, then you need to shut the car down and check your oil.

You would only need to replace the gasket and o-ring when the oil level idiot light would stay on, or when you have an oil leak.

Hope that helps.

Alright.

It's just before I did my last oil change, the light would go out faster then I could even notice it.

Now it stays on for like 3 seconds.

Eric, it's always entertaining to read your posts. I wouldn't worry too much. Sometimes it takes a while for the pumps to build enough pressure in the block. Make sure your oil level is correct.

Did you change oil types?

Like Barry said, and what I said before, it takes some time for the light to go out, as the oil builds pressure.

I didn't change oil types or do anything different.

Erik you crack me up! My friend Greg is JUST like you. He takes his car in the shop once a week for this little noise (that only he hears) or something feels funny, etc...

If it comes on when you are driveing, then you have troubles. If it's just on at start up, don't worry about it, unless it stays on for over 10sec. The engine needs to build up pressure, then the light goes out.

Do you put a little oil in the filter before you install it?

You can get a PRE-Oiler system, then the light would never go on.

Actully, what kind of oil filter are you using? Some oil filters are designed differently. Some use a check valve to keep the filter full to avoid some of the time required to pump ht system. Use BMW filters only, this is obvious. My M20 never stayed on for 3 sec, maybe like 2 max. Good luck. Peter

Your engine is about to explode. Anything past 2.8975 seconds is bad, real bad.

You know I only joke around with ya because you earn it.
