Upon the introduction of the E46 3-series, there were two concurring warranties that came with every new vehicle. One was the basic warranty which covered the body, powertrain, etc., against defects. The other was a Full Maintenance Warranty which covered minor services to the vehicle such as oil changes and Inspection I. It also extended coverage for wear and tear items such as brakes, windshield wiper blades, and even your clutch.
Both of these warranties were 3yr/36K miles from 1999-2001. During this time you had the option to upgrade your Full Maintenance Warranty to 4yr/50K for an extra charge.
Now when the September 2001 production began, BMW upped the standard Full Maintenance Warranty to 4yr/50K. However, they kept the 3yr/36K basic warranty along with the vehicle. Doesn't make much sense, right? Why have a basic warranty on a vehicle that has another warranty on it which is better and inclusive of all the benefits of the shorter one?
Which is what BMW realized 9/02. Since that time, all new BMWs come with a 4yr/50K Warranty which includes Full Maintenance within that time/mileage period and the basic 3yr/36K warranty was dropped.
So, to answer brent6w, yes - the 2000 328Ci is out of warranty since it is not a CPO BMW. But you can always make it a CPO by requesting it be certified at an authorized BMW CPO center and paying for all the necessary repairs to meet the criteria.
