| i tried to find info on this after i did mine. i think the general concensus is that the stock tranny mounts, when they start to wear, can allow the transmission to "flex" too much under load (high revs), and when the transmission moves inside the transmission tunnel, the gear pattern moves with it. hence, a pull backwards into 4th gear from 3rd actually becomes a pull into 2nd because the transmission isn't aligned properly.
depending on how hard you hit it, you might get away with it, you might just cause minor damage, or (like me) you might destroy the engine. aftermarket tranny mounts (like uuc) and/or short shifters seem to be the best defenses.
