exactly. Just be a smart buyer. Ask questions, and lots of them. Follow up on anything he mentions.. he gives a mechanics name, talk to that mechanic.
I wouldnt buy a car unless I could check it out personally. I would talk to the seller first, find out everything I possibly can - but it will still be only what he says. But if what he says sounds good and you beleive in those words, take the time (and money) to go see the car personally and take it to a top mechanic to be checked out.
If everything clears then you got a deal!
But dont go into it blindly. Its up to the buyer to not get hosed. Period.
