It does work.. and it will continue to work, but at the same time BMW is expanding their market and the preferences of many different buyers. For example the 6 series will appeal to an entire new crowd of people that BMW hasn't really offered a product to in the past.

I think they are too simplistic to be competetive w/ Mercedes at the moment. Mercedes has an endless (and complicated) lineup of cars.. there really is something for everyone.. something that fits ant would-be consumer like a glove, and BMW needs to get a little closser to them in that respect. x/z/m/3/5/7 is an incredibly simple model lineup when you think about it. They need more classes that stand out and aren't simple a larger (more expensive) version as the numbers get higher. The 6 is again a perfect example. I think they are going in the right direction.
