A HANS device is a head-restraint that connects your helmet to the seat. This helps prevent whiplash (what killed NASCAR driver Dale Earnhart). Most professional racing leagues require the HANS device to help save lifes.
And no device would have saved this person's life in this case. It was up to God or luck (whichever you believe in).
