7 or 8 series transmissioin question

I have a 750 V12 and automatic transmission I was told that the 750 and 850 from 91 shared the same transmission, the only difference was in the EGS controll box. That is what I have been told so far. My question is if you unplug the 4 or 5 wire harness from the transmission what will happen? Will it still shift? What exactly does the controll box do?
