I don't think it's been discussed before. Obviously it would fit, the question is how difficult would it be? I would assume the overall dimensions of the M62 and S62 would be nearly identical meaning you could re-use stuff like motor mounts, drive shaft, etc.

I think you need to read this. I talked to Ron personally about this swap in my 8 and he actually convinced me to go with an earlier M62 swap due to the cost/result ratio. Great guy, and we are discussing a consulting package for both the swap in the article and the other.

Yes, I am talking about the M60 to M62 swap, and it depends on your definition of not yielding much at all. First of all I'm doing a 6spd manual (M5 tranny) conversion with a custom geared LSD (3.45). The M62 has the same HP as the M60 but more torque. The 840 is already lighter in front than the 850 by about 100lbs., so combine that with another 300+ lbs. lightened by losing the automatic and torque converter, 75-100lbs. from a lighter custom exhaust system, plus another couple hundred from other tricks I have planned, and it begins to make a real difference. Using the UUC LTW flywheel and the big 280mm CSI clutch with the rear gears will get the 8er going very well and keep into the better power band of the M62. My initial approach to performance with my 8 is not to throw tons of money at trying to produce more horsepower, but rather to give a good engine all the breaks to let out and use the pretty decent HP and torque it already has. Sure, if money were no object I'd put the S62 in, but I can do all the mods above and bolt on a supercharger for less than the cost of the engine alone. When all is said and done I want a clean, smooth, performer at a reasonable cost.

ahhh good point/
didnt know the auto tranny was so heavy.
why didnt you just buy a manual M62?

what "other tricks" do you have?
lighter brakes, ridding of sound proofing?

Cool

What you don't realize is that an 840 of any year was never offered in the US. All the OEM parts are still available and I have ordered everything but the transmission and clutch from Germany. When completed it will be OEM quality but better, and I say that because it won't have the standard self-adjusting clutch (SAC) nonsense, and the rearend is now limited slip whereas that also was never offered, only open drivelines. The Getrag S6S 420G transmission was used in the 540i's and M5's and is a direct bolt-on. My other 'tricks' include a couple very large pieces made in CF. (more on that as it develops)
