Hey hey, they are not that bad to maintain if you do the work your self. If you can't spin a wrench I would say to stay away from the cars because it is going to be the labor that kills you (or if you don't mind paying 2500 in labor to change a clutch...)

After owning 3 of them the most important thing is to do a PPI, make sure you know what you are getting because if you buy a car that will need a front end reseal, belts / rollers, clutch, tranny, suspension, rebuilt brakes, and some electical work you can just kill yourself and get it over with because it would cost double the cars value to get it squared away.

Now it depends on what you want the car for as to which year to choose.

Track car:
86 Turbo: They are lighter, and if you are going to modify the suspenion / brakes / turbo then you just took away all the advantages of the 88 turbo S and 89's. Also the 86 Turbo's come with forged rods, forged wheels (if you get fuchs), and a diff cooler.

Street car (that you are leaving stock):
88 Turbo S, or 89 Turbo. They come with LSD, M030 suspension (upgraded sways, springs, torsion bars, and koni adj shocks), and Big brakes(S4 calipers, that have pistons as big as big reds), and the K26/7 (upgraded from the k26/6).

If you have IM feel from to IM me at klasic01 with any questions. Also I saw you posted on rennlist, there is a lot of good info in the archives there.

Also my car is always for sale at the right price and it has:
Leda Coil-overs w/ 24 pt adj
M030 sway bar
Fuchs
NACA duct to cool headers
header wrap
Tial 35mm wastegate
Greddy Profec A set at 17.4 psi (1.2 bar)
Link MAP upgrade
Test pipe
k27/6
Custom chips (Guru Racing)
Dyno results this weekend (shooting for 300-310 rwhp)
