bmw733i84- Thats awesome man. I have a 1986 325e (pics on E30 section) and Ive probably put so much more than what the car is worth and i keeo giving it love. It takes a certain person to mod and love a car of our age that has no "classic" value, thats cool. Was the 5 speed E23 rare? I think back then, it was more acceptable to have a 7er in stick. That commends respect, nice car.

Hi guys,

I'm thinking about getting a 7 or 5. Haven't made up my mind yet. Just moved to DC from Norway so it will still be some time before I get a BMW.

What about the 750i compared to the 740. I see I get all the extras on the 750, like NAV and Xenon, but "never" on the 740. Is the V12 expensive to maintain? Any known major issues either on the 4.4L 740 or the V12?

The BMW V12s are notoriously expensive to maintain and the V8's had the Nikasil problem, although I think by the time they were 4.4's they solved that.

this is not true, you can get all the options like nav and xenon on the 740, and only some of the pre 4.4L engines had the nikasil problem, go to E38.org or to www.bimmerboard.com for accurate information, DTMpower is not good for 7 series cars.

started off with an e21.....been an e30 guy for about 6 years....now im an e38 enthusiast as of last week.....i still have my e30 but it started to not be so great when i ahd to put a car seat in the back, so i came up on a '95 740iL, black on tan w/ 200k on the odo.....it was maintained as it should've been so it looks and runs as if it were only a couple years old......all it really needs is bulb replacement for the check/radio diplay and the rear sunshade switch....and the radio cuts off/on often, itsounds as if it would be a loose wire or worn contact......

as far as mods, the car's already bad ass the way it is so it doesnt need much.....here's what i have in mind: k&n drop-in filter, chip, europlate, red/clear taillights, m parallels would be nice but $ is an issue for me so 18" or 19" staggered multispoke/bbs style splitspoke, deep dish a must, one 10" sub for a lil extra thump, and maybe some shadowlining.........

i'll get some pics up soon....

I kind of know both of you guys, I can see where both of you are coming from, my day job is as a software/systems engineer, so I know complexity when I see it.

The BMW M70/S70 engine is quite complex but if you find someone who knows it & the motronic that goes with it most of the diagnosis problems go away, and my guess is 90% of the problems relate to working out what the problem is, thats based on my experience of "hard" problems in the telco world.

Finding a good shop thats not a "stealer" I think is the key to running a Bimmer and not having to get your hip pocket nerve cauterised

Cheers,
Iain.
