Just got a 635csi, need suggestions!

I just got an 85 635csi from a used car lot the other day. The exterior is beautiful but the interior is not so good. It's got 129,000 miles and has 16x8 BBS 3 piece beaded wheels on it. Got the whole thing for 4500. I need some suggestions on what I should do with it.

First off, what should I do with a new, used car? Replace the air filter, oil, oil filter, fuel filter, what else? It desperately needs a valve job (huge valve tick). Can I learn to do this by myself?

Second, what should I do with the interior? It's got cracks in the dash, and the front two seats need to be replaced. They're electric sport seats, and the color is a burgandy, the used car dealer said it was "ox blood red". I don't know If i should just get them re-upholstered or just get new seats (some of the motors don't work). How much is a new seat? Can i get it in this color?

3rd, after I get everything working, what kind of performance mods can I do to it? I guess I'll get a chip. Which one should I get? Should I get a Cold Air Intake or just a drop-in, K&N filter?
How much can I do to it that is not that expensive.

Comments appreciated, and pics coming soon!

Build yourself an exhaust, thats about $400 and an afternoon @ the local machine shop. Build an intake for about $50 ($40 for filter $10 for piping). Chip it for ~$300 thats about 40hp right there (chip claims 24hp and 19ftlbs) Is it a 5-speed or a ZF auto? As for the seats, check the roadfly 6 series message boards. Welcome to the family of the Sharks!

sell it to me. haha j/k

but yeah, do all that maintenance stuff. and pick up a bently or haynes (if there's one available), and the specs for what size feeler guage u need for the valve adjustment should be in there. if the valvetrain setup is similar to the m20 and m10 motors then yeah, it's a relatively easy job you can do yourself.

Seats. new sport seats in leather from recaro same as the M6 will set you back about 1-2k a pop. Get them re done and the motors are probably fine just the wiring is sketchy.

For maintnence, go with all new filters and plugs. Adjusting the valves is really simple.

To make a colder air system:

I paid in total about 65 dollars and it works well. Incoming air temps have dropped baout 20 degrees, still hot but not exhaust manifold temps.

The valve adjustment seems hard, but possible. Do you have any more pictures of the process?

1. Change all fluids and filters: air, oil, tranny, diff. Change plugs and perhaps wires.

2. Buy the Bentley E28 5 Series manual. '83+ 6 series and E28 5 series cars are the same under the skin.

3. Chip, exhaust, intake, Schrick cam, headers. In that order. A lower geared limited slip diff. is a great bang for the buck mod. Don't do the K&N. Use the stock paper for a drop-in or an ITG for a cone. How fast do you want to go, how much do you want to spend?

AD. The valve lash adjustment spec is 0.012 and the actual adjustment is using the eccentric that forms part of the rocker. All you do is loosen the locking nut a tad and move the ecentric to either tighten or loosen the spec. The hardest part is rolling the engine over. I do this by pulling the plugs out and using a BFW on the alternator nut. Just a little down force on the belt and she goes right over.

What they are refering to about overlap with the cam profile is pretty basic. What you are doing is putting the valves in the closed position by putting another in the open position. figure 40 shows the precedure just about as anyone can for adjustment. It's rather simple once you get to the valves. Just remember that every cylinder in the engine is 180* out from another which the chart shows for example #6 is overlaped -both valves open-when #1 is closed.

Mp. Right now I'd say he's still a little far from turning up the power with cams and what not. I also question the value of chipping it when nothing else has been changed. It's always been my logic that chipping just raises theoretical limitations assuming that no mechanicals are changed.

And for the record, making adjustments to intake and exhaust systems merely allows the engine to retain more of the power it is generating to devote to propulsion. The only time you are making more power is by changing mechanical systems EG cams and pistons or having the head machined. Sound advice froma machinist comeinto play here; you should only start making changes to computert systems when mechanical systems dictate. He's pretty on the ball with a lot of things and I agree with him in that raising shift points and injection maps are somewhat unnecessary when camprofile and compression etc etc aren't yeilding parameters that are outside of the map the computer has and can make adjustment for.

The plan is first to get a turner motorsport chip, then an air filter. You say no K&N? I know the cone filters don't work because of all the hot air, but i thought the replacements you put in the airbox were good because they got cold air. As for the exhaust, what should I get ? I don't know anything about exhausts. A performance muffler? What kind? Right now I have a 528e exhaust with a cat that is pretty badly rusted.

Will the valve adjustment restore some of it's power? It's got pretty bad valve tick but I really don't know If i could adjust it by myself. I really don't know much about cars, but am slowly learning. I wish there were video instructions.

not sure if the big 3.5s have similar valvetrains to m20's or m10's.....but if it is checkout this website: http://www.3dtriad.com/e21/tech/valves1.html

and make sure you know what feeler guage you need, it may be different.
