The E36 M3 with manual tranny would test anywhere between 6.1 seconds and 5.3 seconds (OK that 5.3 was a LTW i think), so it makes sense that the 330 could have a similar variance. Also, anyone who's driven the 330 Sport and E36 M3 is aware that the two cars are far closer than most M3 drivers would want (me included).
