I start with a very rough sketch on how I want the proportions and shape to go, then upload a sketch into Photoshop and start some simple line work to follow... nothing time consuming because I always end up changing the design halfway anyway... Then I start rendering in Adobe Photoshop, simply adding layer after layer of rendered shapes to get a final image...
For Example, this Golf GTi sketch took maybe 10 minutes to sketch and maybe the lines took 1 minute...
Then after about 6 hours of rendering I end up with this...
