I imagine being a BMW tech is just like wrenching for any other manufacturer - there are the perks and there are the crappy parts. When I looked into the STEP program a few years back it was definitely more polished looking than your average mechanical school. Having not ever considered myself a professional wrench I can't comment on the job satisfaction, but there is nothing in this world that I find more gratifying that doing work on my own car.
