Ummm.. The e46 M3 is actually considered to be a more pure drivers car than the e36. They got it closer to the e30s handling with the e46 and that was done on purpose because the e36 was lacking severely compared to the original e30. The e46 was a back to basics design while keeping the same levels of luxury as the e36. The e30 however still remains by far the best drivers car. The e46 is not a watered down version of the e36 but rather the other way around. Handling and power to weight ratios are better on the e46. You need a different reason to choose the e36 over the e46. The only real reason there is would be the obvious price difference. That's about it. OTher than that the e46 is superior to the e36 in every tangible way. The e30 beats the e46 in handling but the e46 beats the e30 in amenities and luxury so in my mind its a toss up between those two depending on what you want from your car. I'm pretty sure most people who voted for the e36 are doing so mainly because they can actually afford one or know some one who has one. The e46 is unattainable by most still and that is deffinitely a drawback. But, that is really its only drawback.
