Alternatly, with the engine running and at operating temp give everything a coat of degreaser then really soak the dirty bits. Wash the whole lot down with the engine still running. Avoid directly spraying the Intake, Coil/s, Distributor, Leads with too high pressure but give it all a good rinse.

Washing your engine while running is better in my opinion, if you do wet down something your not supposed to, the engine will faulter and you know exactly where to start with the WD40 to get it all going again!

Cold water and engines don't mix when dealing with the cooling system! Never pour cold water INTO a hot engine as you can crack the head as the Alloy will cool faster than the Cast Iron block.
I worked & years as a mechanic and never had disarsterous problems washing an engine hot and running. Just the ocassional wet lead or wiring connection.
