HFM = Hot Film Meter. It is the device that meters the intake charge for the ECU to determine the running variables of the engine.

You will always need some sort of metering device. Chances are it was just relocated out of sight. If it was removed all together (rare and pointless) it was likely in favor of a MAP system (Manifold Absolute Pressure) another means of metering the intake charge.
