| An inline 6 engine is put very simply, two 3 cylinder engines mated symetrically to each other and therefore cylinder 1 will always be in the same position as cylinder 6 and 2 with 5 and so on so forth and as such balances itself off and doesnt require a balancer shaft.
The vertical and transverse forces generated by individual cylinders regardless of order are also balanced by one another and therefore produce virtually no vibration.
The other kind of engine that is as balanced as a I6 would be would be the boxer..
So in my opinion, i would say that smoothness/refinement is the primary choice when it comes to using I6's.
