AFAIK - the early windows didn't unzip.
Meguires 15 Plastic Polish does a nice job. It's a bit more agressive than the polish BMW sells in the convertible top care kit. I used #15 on my window and followed it with the BMW polish. It it completely clear now except for the two fold marks in the lower corners.
If the top has really degraded and it went beyond scratching and normal fogging with a surface layer of oxidized plastic,
and IF you are ready to replace it if you can't fix it - then there is one other thing to try.... Goof-Off. I've used with success on the same sort of plastic, it clears the plastic and softens it by dissolving the surface of the plastic.
BMW uses the same sort of plastic, a bit thinner, on the map-window of their motorcycle tank bags. I've restored about 4 of them so far using Goof-Off. I use a clean rag that is damp with goof-off. It is important that the plastic be completely CLEAN before trying this since any dirt on the plastic will be embedded in it by the melting action of the Goof-Off. I take long swipes at the plastic with the cloth, not stopping and just picking it up at the end of the swipe.
WARNING - you may completely fook up your window using Goof-Off on it, so you do this at your own risk. As usual - try in a small area first. I also suggest you do this outside with adequate ventilation - Goof-Off has some nasty stuff in it you don't want to breathe.
Let us know if it works for you. My window looks fine so I haven't tried it, but if it works it may save quite a few people a considerable amount of money.
