Complete replacemet of B25 ECU

Hey guys.. Basically I just wanted to see if anyone knows if the Motronic 1.1 ECU in a 325i can be completely replaced by an aftermarket engine management system (eg. Motec M48, Haltech E11, etc). I was thinking about this because here in Australia I would probably be spending over $1500 for a MAF conversion and a new chip, when for a little bit more I can replace the whole computer and use a MAP sensor, sequential injection and direct-fire ignition.

From what I know about putting aftermarket systems in other cars, you basically just replace the stock one and then tune the fuel/ignition maps accordingly. I spoke to a mechanic who works on BMWs quite often and he said "yeah it might be possible if you can get the right software." Any idea what this means? I thought the aftermarket system comes with its own software and you (or your tuner) sets it all up for your engine.

The only time I could see this not working is if the BMW ECU controls more than just the fuel delivery. eg. Air conditioning or ABS or something (the should be a seperate ABS computer, right?).

Any ideas guys? Thanks in advance.
